About Hazel

Hey everyone! I’m Hazel Beth Marshall. And in describing myself for my own personal “About” section, I find myself struggling to put things into concrete terms. It will have to be abstract, so if you don’t love that then I apologize.

I am on the same journey we are all on. As we navigate this increasingly strange world, we just want a chance to feel safe, so feel capable, and to feel like we’re making the world better. I am a work in progress, as is this page and as are we all. That said, I have reached a point in my life where I am beginning to find some more stable, grounding aspects of my selfhood that I can look to. They are my lodestars on the journey.

I am thoroughly committed to studying, fostering, and engaging in learning throughout the cycle of a life. I am currently studying Learning Technology & Experience Design at NYU for this very purpose to better engage my own learning and to better help others learn as I finish this program. This informs the research I partake in and the projects I pursue throughout the shaping of my life and future.

I see myself as an artist, both separate from and in concert with my other interests. I am driven by a desire to create, to share, and to express through my art. Specifically, I find prose as a mainstay of my artistic endeavors, with other mediums dipping into my work as they fit themselves in. These other mediums have included watercolor, fabric arts, 3D digital art, and ceramics. Additionally, my work frequently gravitates towards interactive media, seeking to involve the viewer further into the work through their personal input. Thematically, I find myself frequently creating works engaging with personal/political interactions, the role of technology in society and in individual lives, and the meaning of the queer person/body in the world.

And finally, I am genuine. I seek to navigate through this world unburdened by irony or pretension, heart affixed fast to my sleeve. Above all else, I wish to be an authentic version of myself and to share the joy in my heart with those around me. Without this, what would be the point?

I hope that you, dear reader, can find a little bit of interest or a little bit of yourself in this piece. If you want to reach out, I am always eager to make a new colleague or connection. So go forth and meet the world with kindness, friend. I’ll see you around!
